“Total chaos” was the headline on Jan. 13 pertaining to the explosion and fire in Lewiston, but it could well be the heading for the story about the hockey rink at the bottom of the page.

City Administrator Jim Bennet seems to be a very busy person. In fact, he’s not able to inform taxpayers and council members until just before it’s time to vote on a project.

Up to that point, secret deals are being hashed out with no public or City Council input, as the Sun Journal editorial of the same date points out.

The list of these secret deals is long and is getting longer as he continues to negotiate these deals and then spring them on the public and the council.

The $2 million loan guarantee was done the same way last year and now the city is throwing more good money after bad into the mix. One of Mr. Bennett’s explanations was the city only had 30 or 40 days, and someone needed to step up to the plate.

Well guess what, the count is three balls and two strikes. One more strike and this fiasco could cost the city upward of $6 million. Isn’t it about time the citizens of Lewiston came out of the dugout and made a pitching change before the next pitch is thrown and chaos follows.

I am not a resident of Lewiston, but these deals could eventually affect every taxpayer of Maine.
