What a delight to see the large picture taken at the start of the men’s 50 kilometer (30-plus miles) cross country ski race at the national ski championships held over the past 10 days in Rumford.

My compliments to the Sun Journal for stimulating the reporting staff to cover this event in which several Olympic skiers from the U.S., Canada and Norway competed. There is no other sporting event in our area in which more than 500 competitors from all across our country gather for a week of competition. Among the skiers were at least four from Lewiston and Auburn who ski for the Bates College ski team, so there was local representation.

Auburn has produced more skiers who have skied for the local high school and then gone on to win national championship titles than any other community in America. That record, plus the fact we have a ski area in Auburn, as well as high school and college ski teams, indicates there is enough interest in the sport for the Sun Journal to want to cover, not just local, but national events as well.
