Last month the board denied a request to have the road posted.

LIVERMORE FALLS – Trustees of the Livermore Falls Water District reversed their previous decision Thursday morning regarding posting the road to Parkhurst Pond in East Jay.

Last month, the board denied the request. They have now agreed with the proposal to post the road.

They hadn’t wanted to close it to recreational uses but, after hearing from the landowner, they agreed to his request noting that it was not their decision as the district only owns a right of way, not the road itself.

Raymond Paul, who owns the road, wants to post it to cut down on traffic. Two weekends ago, in one day 119 vehicles crossed over the road on which only three families live, he said.

These were not sportsmen, but mostly high school kids who begin their travels sometimes as early as 4 a.m. “That’s been a party spot for kids for years and years,” Paul said.

His proposal is to first post the road, “Private Road, No Trespassing Without Permission,” which would allow the Jay Police Department to respond to complaints. Without the signs, officers could not respond, he has been told.

If the signs don’t reduce the traffic, he would then install a chain or cable.

The board did not honor his second request, to run water at night to keep his system from freezing, without additional cost. He can run the water but it will go through the meter, adding to his bill, Superintendent Doug Burdo said.

Approval was given to the fourth quarter budget report, which shows the district in good financial health.

In other business, the board denied a request from a customer who was refusing to pay a $5 late charge on the bill for an apartment building.

The customer, who had never been late before, said the payment had been sent and must have been lost in the mail. However, the board agreed they would have to stay with district policy, noting that even the trustees have had to pay a late fee.

“If we did it for one, we’d have to do it for all,” they agreed.
