The ski tourist survived the slopes but was hit by a car while crossing Main Street.

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) – Getting down one of the nation’s most challenging ski hills, wasn’t the tough part for a New Hampshire skier. He was hit by a pickup while walking across Main Street.

Peter Emmons was in a crosswalk, carrying his skis, when he was hit by a car, suffering minor injuries, said community safety officer Rick Magnuson. The West Lebanon, N.H., resident was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital where he was treated and released.

Magnuson noted skiers are more vulnerable than normal pedestrians because their ski boots make them less mobile. Emmons’ skis were destroyed by other cars that drove over them.

Gary Davis, 25, the driver of the pickup truck, was given three tickets. The Aspen resident was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk, operating a vehicle with an obstructed view and failure to have insurance.

“The driver was going slowly as he had stopped at the stop sign before turning. But he was looking out for traffic from the left and he never saw the pedestrian until he heard the sound of the impact, said Magnuson.

His view was partly obstructed by a missing right side windshield wiper, which allowed considerable slush from magnesium chloride to collect on the windshield.
