Area libraries collecting paperbacks for troops
NORWAY – Six libraries in Oxford Hills are asking the public to share a book with a soldier.
Beginning Jan. 23, the libraries will be collecting books to send to the Norway Armory National Guard Company C of the 133 Engineer Battalion, soon to be stationed in Iraq.
“I was watching television last weekend and started thinking, ‘What role can the library play?'” reference librarian Lynn Bivens said Friday. “I hope people can write a brief note of encouragement to guardsmen who may read the novel.
“I think it’s a good way to connect with the community,” he said.
He said the Norway Library’s goal is to get 300 paperback books.
The other libraries participating are: Harrison’s Caswell Public Library, Oxford’s Freeland Holmes Library, Paris Public Library, West Paris Public Library and the Waterford Library Association.
Bivens said the collection will continue through February and at that time the Norway Library will seek financial assistance from local sponsors to help pay for the costs of shipping books.
