On Jan. 14, the city of Lewiston took on a new debt of $4.7 million concerning the civic center. One more episode where one would think that we could learn from previous mistakes. Now that we control the farm, we need to find a quick fix.

The demographics to me play a big role in its survival. We can’t pick up the building and move it toward the industrial park. But, could we in the future, develop a road off East Avenue near Franklin pasture and Lewiston High School? With an easy access to the center, we could promote more outside activities. It’s not just about hockey. We could rent to sports events, auto and boat shows. Maybe get Celine Dion to pay us a visit. The opportunities are there, and we need to take advantage of this costly building that we could have bought for “peanuts” a few years ago.

With only half of the hockey games played here, we could promote “bus trips” to the “away games” and at the same time, senior citizens could get their prescriptions drugs in Canada. We could contract with Cyr Bus, which is Maine-owned, and every Mainer could benefit. Also, we have to remind ourselves that we are not in Boston.

We need to price the tickets so that more people can attend. Isn’t it more profitable to have every seat with “no vacancy” signs instead of “vacancy.”
