AVON – The Frank Lakin family escaped safely from their burning house on Hare Street Monday afternoon. The fire destroyed the home.
Firefighters from Phillips, Strong and Salem departments responded to the blaze that is believed to have started by a space heater, Phillips Fire Chief Glendon Bachelder said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were visible in the windows on the side facing the road, which is off Avon Valley Road, Bachelder said.
“Everybody got out safely,” he said.
Frank Lakin and his wife, Martella, and children, Kenneth, 8, Annie, 13, and Frankie Jr. and his companion, Heather, and their daughter, Cassidy, 18 months, were staying at a neighbor’s residence down the road while firefighters fought the blaze and smoke.
The American Red Cross was being called in.
Firefighters were still at the scene Monday night.
