LEWISTON – If Lawrence had an offense to go with its defensive zone pressure and goaltending, things would be mighty scary in Class A hockey.
However, shooting the puck five times in a game and allowing nearly 70 is almost always a formula for disaster.
Seven different Lewiston skaters notched a goal and the offense unleashed 69 shots at Lawrence netminder Allie Woods as the Blue Devils cruised to a 7-0 win Monday at the Central Maine Civic Center.
Adam Wilding, Eric Grenier, Adam Longchamps, Nate Gruz, Brian Ricker, Scott Geoffroy and Joe Gauthier each scored for Lewiston, and Brian Nason made saves on the five shots he faced for the shutout win.
“We started out alright,” Lawrence coach Josh Blaisdell said. “At least the guys are skating as a unit now instead of as individuals, unlike at the beginning of the year. We played well defensively, but we just have no offense. We did, however, make them work for their goals.”
Despite outshooting Lawrence 21-1 in the first period, Lewiston (11-0) skated into its locker room with a 1-0 lead, due mostly to Woods.
“She’s a competitor,” Blaisdell said. “She loves the game, and she’s become more aggressive in recent games.”
Five times in the first period alone, Woods stopped a Blue Devil breakaway, twice stuffing Grenier.
Wilding scored his goal at 9:08 of the first on a breakaway. He moved left and then right, lofting the puck into the upper left corner of the net as he skated by.
Grenier got his revenge early in the second, popping in a goal at 5:25 to give Lewiston a 2-0 lead. Longchamps made it 3-0 at 7:46 of the second on a nice feed from Grenier.
“What we have had a hard time doing this year is putting teams away after we have a lead,” Lewiston coach Tim Smith said. “Even today, we were up 1-0 after one and 3-0 after two, and we had so many more chances that we just didn’t connect on.”
Lewiston launched 32 shots at Woods in the third period and connected on four to round out the scoring.
