FARMINGTON – The H. King and Jean Cummings Charitable Fund has provided a grant of $3,000 to the Western Mountains Alliance in support of an event honoring its founder King Cummings. The event, which has been held since 1997, recognizes an organization in the four-county region that best exemplifies Cummings’ vision for western Maine.
This year, the award was given to the Lake George Regional Park in Skowhegan, which is run mostly by volunteers after being saved from developers 10 years ago. It was cited for being a model of collaboration, exemplifying what can be achieved when people with a common vision come together and work together for the common good.
The park is a nonprofit venture which offers year-round activities like swimming, hiking, picnicking, fishing, snowmobiling and crosscountry skiing.
“We are pleased to have the continuing support of the Cummings Charitable Fund for this biennial event as we work to carry out the vision of our founder,” said Deborah Burd, executive director of the alliance.
Previous recipients of the award include the Rangeley Region Economic Growth Council (1997), Piscataquis County Economic Development Council (1999), Androscoggin River Watershed Council (2001).
Established in 1988, the Western Mountains Alliance strives to improve the quality of life and to strengthen the regional identity of the western mountains region of Maine. For more information about its programs, log onto www.westernmountainsalliance.org.
