NORWAY – A new Let’s Talk About It reading and discussion series will start at 7 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Feb. 5, at the Norway Memorial Library. The public is welcome.
The series, titled Modern Times in Maine & America, 1890-1930, will focus on the changes in work and life as a result of industrialization during this time period.
Let’s Talk About It programs are a project of the Maine Humanities Council, which also provides the books for participants to read during the program.
Roland Burns, a retired history professor living in Standish, will facilitate the discussions and provide background material on the readings.
A video, produced and created by the Maine Humanities Council, kicks off the series.
This will be followed by reading the book “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, followed by a discussion at the second session Feb. 19. This book published in 1906 depicts factory life in Chicago through the eyes of a young immigrant worker.
The final three meetings will take place March 4, March 18 and April 1, and the books will be “Herland” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “Babbitt” by Sinclair Lewis, and “As the Earth Turns” by Gladys Hasty Carroll.
For information, call the Library at 743-5308 or visit the library on Main Street to check out a book for the series. Also, visit the Web site www.norway.lib.me.us.
