WINTHROP – A sheriff’s tracking dog caught up with a Livermore boy and a Lewiston girl who allegedly tried to elude police in a stolen vehicle.

The 17-year-old Livermore driver was arrested after he allegedly led police on a chase after not paying $13 for gas at a Cumberland Farms store, Winthrop police Capt. Ryan Frost said.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Auburn that morning, he said.

Frost said a Winthrop officer was nearby when a Cumberland Farms employee reported a gas runoff at the store at Main Street and Route 202.

The officer spotted the car and attempted to pull it over, the captain said, but the car failed to stop and continued driving east on 202.

The driver attempted to make a left-hand turn but skidded off the road in Manchester, Frost said.

The driver and passenger, a runaway from Lewiston, fled the vehicle, he said.

The vehicle was not damaged, he added.

Augusta police and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeffrey Damren and a tracking dog were called in to assist.

The dog tracked the couple to a spot a quarter-mile in the woods, Frost said.

The Livermore teen, who was on probation, was arrested and charged with eluding an officer, theft and operating a motor vehicle without a license, Frost said. He was taken to Kennebec County Jail in Augusta and later transferred to a state detention center.

The girl was returned to a guardian in Lewiston, Frost said.
