The Department of Human Services misplaced millions of federal funds. The accounting section could not account for where the money was spent. They were working on it, and the taxpayers have not been informed.
The Department of Education has millions of federal dollars issued since 2000 sitting in their coffers. Their accounting section could not account for where these funds were spent or if they were spent. When federal dollars are issued, they are to be used within a certain time frame and any carryover monies should be state money. The Department of Education has claimed they didn’t have the funds to implement the No Child Left Behind Federal Program. Now the Department of Education is revising the failing school list of approximately 120 schools. When they get done working these numbers to their liking then most or all of these schools will pass.
The various Maine agencies come up with all kinds of excuses of how, where and why, when they are asked for accountability of federal funds. The federal funds are not to be used to balance the state budget or used in the general fund.
This incompetence causes me concern about where the bond money is spent. The taxpayers of Maine deserve to know where the bond issue funds are spent by each state agency receiving money.
