HARTFORD – Selectmen approved a cover letter Thursday night to accompany the survey being mailed to residents within the month.

The survey will be used by the Planning Board to assess what residents like or dislike about their town and what they visualize for the future. The letter was from the Comprehensive Planning Committee.

In other business, Selectman Lee Holman presented a letter to be mailed to any resident in violation of plowing driveway snow into the road. The letter was approved.

Holman also presented a letter, which was approved, inviting Maynard and Sons Trucking to attend the next selectmen’s meeting to discuss what Maynard intends to do about road sand which is full of clay and not usable.

Bob Calawa brought his concerns over improper use of the Dumpster on Berry Road. He reported that bulky waste and construction material is being put into the Dumpster from outside areas. He asked selectmen to approve a sign, which Calawa will place on the Dumpster, stating there is a $100 fine from unauthorized use of the facility. Board Chairman Scott Swain said if this doesn’t work, they will investigate a lock.

Calawa also said the road inventory is ready and will be presented at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 before the next selectmen’s meeting.

Constable Chuck Merritt said he needs to take a 100-hour training course to certify as a police officer but the cost is $425. This will be included in the budget at the next town meeting. Merritt keeps the beach grounds clear of alcohol, animals and ATVs among other things.

Selectmen were informed of the resignation of John Barker who has served on the Appeals Board and the Comprehensive Plan Committee. His resignation was due to lack of time.

Insurance for town volunteers will be on the meeting warrant. There are about 40 volunteers and the insurance is $3.75 per year per person. This insurance is through Maine Municipal Association.

Hartford selectmen were invited to a meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 with Sumner selectmen. State Commissioner of Education Susan Gendron and SAD 39 Superintendent William Shuttleworth will discuss concerns of state, school and town budgets. State Rep. Rosita Friel has agreed to be part of the discussion as well.
