OXFORD – The town has served court summonses on two junkyard owners who have not complied with previous appeals to clean up their yards.

Summonses were served last week by the Oxford County Sheriff’s Department on Michael Girardin, of 34 North Main St., Mechanic Falls, and the Douglas house at 646 Main St., Oxford.

Code Enforcement Officer Rodney Smith said Girardin’s property at 99 Coldwater Brook Road is full of junk and cars, and has been that way for a couple of years.

“He’s not cooperating,” Smith said.

Douglas has not cooperated either, he said, with repeated requests to clear her property of seven or eight junk cars, along with washing machines and stoves.

Smith said the town has at least three more unlicensed junkyards that he plans to “go after next.”

Renewals for seven junkyard licenses are coming up Feb. 5, Smith said.

At least one of them won’t need a license, he said. Tim Brackett, who ran Brackett’s auto sales on Pottle Road, is no longer in business and has cleaned up the property, Smith said.

The town is also involved in other enforcement action to collect on unpaid debts, said Town Manager Mike Huston. Walt Mosher has been given final notice on a $514.70 transfer station debt going back to 2001, he said. Steve Gravier, owner of Steve’s General Store, owes for a sewer bill going back three quarters, Huston said.

The Norway Sewer District bills the town for service provided to properties in Oxford, and the town collects from the property owners, Huston said.

Also owing sewer debts are some tenants of Robert Bahre’s housing complex on Route 26.

“Some of his tenants owe us significant amounts of money and have disappeared,” Huston said.

Huston plans to ask Bahre to enter into an agreement with the town that would have Bahre charge his tenants for the sewer service, “rather than us having to chase them down.”
