Congratulations to columnist Jim Carignan on the extensive survey of the Bush boondoggle (Jan. 11).

How come so few people still refuse to accept this as premeditated war? How come so many people have given up their power to such arrogant, corporate-backed schemes to rip us off? Were we so fearful and angry at Sept. 11 we have refused to think rationally after? Why are we giving in to overwhelming national debt for our children and grandchildren just to save a few tax dollars now?

As Sen. Fulbright’s 1966 book, “The Arrogance of Power,” was quoted, the first chapter gave a neat parable: an aggressive Boy Scout had to force an old lady to cross the street in order to score his good deed. Yet President Bush’s so called good deed in Iraq and Afghanistan needed no moral or ethical reason, no supportive political philosophy.

And we justify our great world power by being the largest world manufacturer of weapons of mass destruction. So power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
