BANGOR – Buddy Leavitt drained 17 points to lead five different players in double digits as Husson College downed Becker College 82-57 in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Bill Beaureguard added 16 points as the Braves cruised to a 45-21 lead at the end of the first half.
Becker was led by Richard Fazzi with a game-high 22 points.
Colby 69, Connecticut 40
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Nick Farrell poured in a game-high 19 points and Andrew Jenkins added 10 points to lead Colby College to a convincing 69-40 win over Connecticut College in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The White Mules took control of the game in the second half, outscoring the Camels (5-11) 31-13 in the final 20 minutes.
Roger Williams 67, UNE 56
BRISTOL, R.I. – Brandon Parrish scored a game-high 16 points and hauled down nine rebounds to lead Roger Williams to a 67-56 win over the University of New England in men’s basketball Saturday evening.
Brian Scharrewenweber and Ryan McKeefrey added 13 and 12 points respectivley in the victory.
The Nor’easters were led by Matt McManus with 13 points. Brandon Berthiaume and Mark Oliver chipped in with 11 and 10 points.
Eastern Conn. 68, USM 42
GORHAM – Martin Kokoszka scored 13 points and Michael Kipphut added 12 points to lead Eastern Connecticut State College to a 68-42 win over the University of Southern Maine in Little East Conference basketball action Saturday evening.
The Warriors used a methodical 8-0 run midway through the first half to put the game out of reach with a 34-18 lead by the half.
The Huskies (6-11) were led by Jessie McKinnell with 13 points and Mike Francouer who chipped in with 12.
Bates 65, Tufts 62
MEDFORD, Mass. – Freshman guard Zak Ray hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Bates College a 65-62 victory over Tufts University in NESCAC men’s basketball action Saturday.
Bates led by nine points twice in the first half, but the Jumbos (4-11) cut the deficit down to one, 38-37, with four seconds left in the first half
Senior tri-captain Ramon Garcia led the Bobcats (13-3) with 20 points.
The Bobcats took a five-point lead, their largest of the half, on field goals from junior Elliott Linsely and Garcia with 3:10 left in regulation, but the Jumbos rallied back to a 62-62 tie with three seconds on the clock.
Men’s hockey
Colby 3, Connecticut 0
WATERVILLE – Joel Morash scored a goal and added an assist to propel Colby College to a 3-0 win over Connecticut College in men’s hockey action Saturday afternoon.
The White Mules found the back of the net at 7:31 of the first period as Morash converted a pass from Ross MacMillan and Patrick Rutherford for the only goal they would need to register the victory.
Nate Stanglein and Brian Chisholm added insurance goals.
Chris Ries turned back 26 shots to record the shutout.
USM 2, UMass-Boston 1
GORHAM – Freshman Brian Collins scored the game-winning goal midway through the second period to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 2-1 ECAC East win over the University of Massachusetts at Boston Saturday afternoon.
The Beacons (2-15) opened up the scoring when sophomore Gerard Hickey netted a goal to the glove side on a partial breakaway at 8:57 of the first period.
Sophomore James LeBlanc scooped up a loose puck and skated up the undefended alley to even things up at 2:58 of the second period.
Bowdoin 4, Tufts 1
BRUNSWICK – Adam Dann netted a pair of goals to lift Bowdoin to a 4-1 win over Tufts in men’s hockey action Saturday.
The Jumbos (4-10) scored first when Shawn Sullivan converted a pass from Pat Byrne at the 7:32 mark of the first period.
The Polar Bears (10-4) responded less than two minutes later with a goal from James Gadon to knot up the contest. Dann’s goals were scored midway through the second and third frames and Jesses Minneman put the finishing touches on with an empty-net goal.
Women’s basketball
USM 64, Eastern Conn. 56
GORHAM – Jen Webster scored a team-high 17 points to pace three Huskie players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine handed Eastern Connecticut State University a 64-56 setback in Little East Conference action Saturday afternoon.
Tiffany Jones and Megan Myles scored 13 and 12 points respectivley as the Huskies (16-1) withstood a furious second-half comeback to register their 16th win of the season.
The Warriors (14-2) were led by Allison Coleman with a game-high 19 points.
Bowdoin 55, Wesleyan 43
BRUNSWICK – Laura Trenkle poured in a game-high 22 points to lead Bowdoin College to its 16th win of the season as the Polar Bears handed Wesleyan College a 55-43 loss in NESCAC basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Eileen Flaherty added 10 points as the Polar Bears (16-0) used a 13-1 run in the final four minutes to secure the victory.
The Cardinals were paced by Amy Posocco and Ashley Mastrangelo who scored 11 points apiece.
Colby 63, Connecticut 47
WATERVILLE – Wendy Bonner scored 17 points on 8-for-11 shooting and hauled down 11 rebounds to lead Colby College to a 63-47 win over Connecticut College Saturday afternoon.
Laura WIlliamson added 11 points for the White Mules (9-9).
Mary Bushnell and Emily Carroll scored 12 points apiece to pace the Camels’ attack.
Lyndon State 59, UMPI 56
PRESQUE ISLE – Rachel Maxwell had a double-double with the game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds to edge Lyndon State to a 59-56 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Rachel Larlee led the Owls’ (3-8) offense with 18 points, while Erica McGary and Sarah Nason tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively.
UMPI led 29-20 at the half, but Lyndon State’s (7-3) three-point shooting, 5-of-10, in the second half made the difference. Jamie Russo had four from beyond the arc as a component of her 14-point contribution in the win.
Women’s hockey
Colby 3, Connecticut 1
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Kate Sweeney notched the eventual game-winning goal for Colby in a 3-1 victory over Connecticut College in women’s hockey action Saturday.
Kristin Putnam netted the first goal of the contest for the Mules (2-12), while Heather DeVito capped the outing with an unassisted goal with three seconds remaining.
Gabby Petrill, who is the nation’s leader in saves with 561 stops, had 34 saves in net for the Camels (4-12), while Lynn Haday deflected 21 for the Mules.
Bowdoin 4, Amherst 1
AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Marissa O’Neil had a goal and two assists as Bowdoin skated to a 4-1 win over Amherst in women’s hockey action Saturday.
The Polar Bears (10-3-1) netted three goals in less than a five-minute span in the first period to take the thunder from the Jeffs. First-year Meghan Gillis nailed a backhanded shot for the third goal.
Lyndsay Grabowski collected 31 saves in net for the Jeffs (7-7), while Cat MacEachern turned back 18 for the Polar Bears in the win.
UConn 3, Maine 2
ORONO – Tiffany Owens slammed the tying and go-ahead goals to send the University of Connecticut to a 3-2 win over the University of Maine in women’s hockey action Saturday.
Karen Droog opened the scoring for the Black Bears (8-10-3) just under four minutes into the game on assists from Kelly Law and Kate Sunstrum.
Andrea Steranko converted a relay from Sonia Corriveau to retake the lead for the Black Bears one minute following a game-tying goal by the Huskies (7-12-3).
