• Jan. 22, 8:20 p.m. – Ross Congo, 21, of Brighton, Mass., was not injured when he lost control of his 1997 Saturn station wagon while driving on the wet surface of Route 2 during a snowstorm. The car, which sustained an estimated $12,000 in damage, slid sideways, struck a guardrail, flipped over and came to rest on its roof.

• Jan. 20 – Reported suspicious activity on Route 2 turned out to be a Vermont man taking a break from driving. Police did not list the time of the incident.

• Jan. 20 – Officer Mark Dow responded to a request for assistance from Mexico police, who were dispatched to Tommy Gun’s Pit Stop on Roxbury Road (Route 17) for a reported fight in progress. Upon arrival, the fight participants had already departed.

• Jan. 20 – After receiving several complaints about suspicious goings-on in the vicinity of Norton Road and Route 2, police are seeking information from the public. Chief Richard A. Pickett said that in one such incident, two people were observed in a small, dark-colored Chevrolet S10 blazer “casing” residences. One person was seen scoping people’s homes using binoculars, according to one complainant who caught the duo in the act, but they sped off down the road, Pickett said. “Suspicious activity reports are frequently watched by police for clues in burglary reports or other similar criminal activity,” he added.

• Jan. 18, 1:25 a.m. – Four people were injured when the 2002 GMC sport utility vehicle they were riding in left Route 2, rolled over and crashed through a utility pole about nine-tenths of a mile east of Twin Rivers Lumber yard. Driver Denise Benedix, 48, of Rumford, complained of back pain, as did passenger Kristi A. Harting, 25. Passengers Richard Venskus, 46, and Amy Burgess, 28, suffered cuts and lacerations to their arms, while passenger Nathan J. Hutchinson, 22, suffered cuts and lacerations to his face. Two people were transported by Med-Care Ambulance to Rumford Hospital for evaluation and treatment. The SUV sustained an estimated $12,000 in damage. M/T Pockets of Dixfield towed the vehicle. Dixfield firefighters assisted with traffic control until a Central Maine Power crew replaced the pole later that morning. The crash cut off electricity to several residents.

Arrests

• Bert Knox, 37, of Carthage, on charges of disorderly conduct and refusal to submit to arrest, on Jan. 22 at 1:12 a.m. in the middle of Weld Street. He was also summoned for hitchhiking, and transported to Oxford County jail in Paris.
