MECHANIC FALLS – Mechanic Falls-Poland Adult and Community Education’s winter program is under way. The Learning Center is accepting new day and evening students for skill upgrading, high school diplomas and General Education Development testing. The Business Skills and Computer Labs are also enrolling new students.

Enrichment classes include:

Soothe the Stress: Share and learn techniques to soothe stress, support the immune system, lift spirits and relieve aches and pains. Register for one or all sessions. Wear comfy clothing and bring a pillow and a blanket or mat. Wednesday, Jan. 28, Soothe the Stress; Feb. 4, Support Your Immune System; Feb. 11, Lift Your Spirits; Feb. 18, Relieve Your Aches and Pains. All are from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Adult Heart Saver: An American Heart Association course designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on adult victims. There will be a slide presentation to cover basic anatomy and physiology, heart disease, risk factors, heart attacks and strokes. Practical skills will be performed on mannequins to learn one rescuer CPR and rescue breathing. Thursday, Jan. 29, from 6 to 9 p.m.

E-Mail Basics: The hands-on course will give the skills needed to navigate the Internet using Internet Explorer, and the ability to write, send and receive e-mail using Outlook Express. If time permits, learn how to use search engines, set up a home page and bookmark favorite places. Monday, March 1, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. (three weeks).

Ballroom Dancing: Learn the basics of dancing with a partner. Specify when registering if a leader or a follower. Couples and singles are welcome. Maine Ballroom Dance provides professionally trained dance instructors who teach dance steps and include partnering and technique training. Dancers receive coupons for other dance events. Tuesdays, March 2 to April 6, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Knitting Workshop: Get help with an unfinished project or peruse patterns and find a piece to knit. Tuesdays, March 2, 9, 16 and 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Microsoft Word: Learn how to use the most popular word processor for Windows. If is an introductory course in word processing using Microsoft Word 97 and Windows 98. Learn how to create, print, open, edit and format documents, text alignments and enhancements. Wednesdays, March 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (four weeks).

Keeping Your PC Healthy: Learn how to speed up a computer for first-rate performance by scheduling regular maintenance. Free up hard disk space, make programs run faster and optimize hard disk performance. Thursday, March 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Line Dancing: No partner necessary. Children 8 and older welcome with parent or guardian. It is mandatory that six register if a class is to run. Thursdays, March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1 and 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Dried Flower Wreath: Learn the basics and complete a small wreath featuring dried flowers and accessories. Participants will need a glue gun, clippers or utility shears. Monday March 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Good Discipline, Good Kids: Respectful communication between parents and children is the key to good discipline. Take the class to learn how to engage cooperation; effectively set rules, expectations and limits; problem-solve; alternatives to punishment; accept and respect children’s feelings; and manage anger. Monday, March 8, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bring a notebook.

Picture Matting: Learn five or so basic matting designs. Wednesday, March 10, 17, 31, April 7 and 14, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Maine Driving Dynamics: The five-hour course offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities. It will include discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. The course format engages students with videos and class discussion/participation. Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record. Tuesday, March 16, and Thursday, March 18, from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Family Cookbook: Participants will put together a book of family favorites along with anecdotal history. It can be handwritten or typed. Material cost will depend on how many copies and how many pages are printed. Mondays, March 22, 29, April 5 and 12, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Protecting Children Online: Discuss the information superhighway and develop rules to keep children safe. Tuesday, March 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Bring a notebook.

Pediatric CPR: The American Heart Association course is designed to teach the necessary skills to perform CPR on infants and children. There will be slides on child and infant safety. Practical skills will be performed on mannequins to learn CPR and rescue breathing. Thursday, March 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Decoupage on Glass: Create decorative plates (or other items), including Easter theme. Wednesday, March 31, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Routine Car Maintenance for Dummies: The course will introduce the basics of auto maintenance to people who have no knowledge or understanding of how a car operates. Learn how to check the oil, transmission and brake fluids and correct tire inflation. Mondays, April 5 and 12, from 6 to 8 p.m.

First Aid: The American Red Cross course is designed to teach the basics of first aid using videotaped demonstrations and actual skill work in recognizing and responding to emergencies, bleeding control, splinting and sudden illness. Those who complete the course will receive an American Red Cross first aid basics card. Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 10 p.m.

May Day the Forgotten Holiday: A little history, a little custom, a little craft. Learn about May Day celebrations and create a May basket to keep or give. Wednesday, April 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Gardens -Get Them Ready: Learn simple but effective tips from a master gardener and meet others who love gardening. Wednesday, May 12, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Container Gardening: Participants may make a window box or fill a container with spring and/or summer flowers. Bring a container (up to 24″) or purchase a 24″ window box. Wednesday, May 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Fitness for Life: Aerobics classes feature step aerobics and resistance exercises to tone and strengthen the entire body. Classes are taught in levels to accommodate adults of all abilities and fitness types. Teens are welcome with an attending adult. Next class begins Monday, March 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. for six weeks.
