LEWISTON – Dog owners are running out of time to avoid steeper licensing late fees.

Dog are required to be registered by Jan. 1, but the state gives owners until Jan. 31 – this Saturday – to register. The fee for spayed or neutered dogs is $6. Male and female dogs cost $10 to register.

Late fees were increased sharply this year. Dogs registered between Feb. 1 and Feb. 10 will incur a $15 late fee, three times the $5 late fee charged last year. Owners who register their dogs after Feb. 10 will incur a $25 late fee.

Last year, that late fee was $10. Lewiston City Clerk Kathy Montejo said she’s afraid many Lewiston dog owners will be in for a surprise this year because of the fee increases. So far, 25 percent of Lewiston dog owners that registered last year have failed to do so this year.

Dog owners need to show a current Maine rabies certificate. Lewiston residents can register at the Lewiston City Hall, 27 Pine St. in Lewiston. Auburn residents can register at the Auburn City Clerk’s office, 45 Spring St.
