BETHEL – The Bethel WinterFest this weekend will feature a snowmobile radar run. Snowmobile enthusiasts are invited to compete in races that will test skill and speed, with prizes awarded in divisions based on engine size.

The radar run will take place at Bethel Airport on North Road from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

Snowmobilers interested in participating should preregister at Sun Valley Sports, or by calling 824-7533.

Race participants and spectators will also have a chance to view new snowmobile equipment at a snowmobile show, also at the airport. Sponsored by Oxford Networks and Profile Motor Sports Plus, the event will showcase several brands of machines, equipment, and accessories.

Bethel firefighters will provide a barbecue lunch at the airport on both days.

For people who prefer water sports, the fourth annual Androscoggin River Polar Bear Plunge will take place at the Bethel Outdoor Adventure and Campground at noon Saturday. All are welcome to take the plunge, which will raise money for the Fire Department and the Telstar High School girls’ softball team. Jumpers can get pledge sheets at the Bethel Chamber of Commerce.

Anyone who prefers the sky to land or water will have a chance to rise above it all in a hot air balloon. Balloons will depart from the airport at 7 a.m. both days and at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Passengers will be taken up, weather and space permitting. Tethered balloon rides will also be offered at the airport from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Adults may ride for $10, and children under 12 for $5. Proceeds go to the Bethel Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship fund.

Other events include an ice carving demonstration in the Bethel Commons.
