This is in response to the article “Who are these guys?” in the Sports section on Jan. 25. The AP sports writer refers to Super Bowl XXXVIII as a starless competition this year. He also comments that there are no stars on the New England Patriots.
Tom Brady is a true star and does not deserve to be overlooked. He led the Patriots to the Super Bowl his first year, is leading them to Super Bowl XXXVIII this year, and set a new record for the lack of interceptions thrown. Sure, he isn’t so hot in the long game and doesn’t move very fast, but that is not what makes the star. Brady knows his strength is in the short game and that is what makes him so great.
I was disgusted to see that the writer sees a football player as a star only if they can show off with their 40-yard spirals. Furthermore, the Patriots also have superstar Ty Law, who devastated Peyton Manning’s record for throwing no interceptions this season by making four in one game.
So let me ask this, what exactly makes a player a star?
To me, it is someone who is a leader, plays off of his strengths, is respected and, above all, is a team player. Now call me ignorant but doesn’t that describe Tom Brady perfectly?
This reader thinks sports articles need to support their claims better.
