BOSTON (AP) – Glen Murray scored his second goal of the game 2:25 into overtime, giving the Boston Bruins a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.
Andrew Raycroft made 23 saves for the Bruins, the 23rd time in 33 complete games this season he’s allowed no more than two goals.
Murray, who leads the team with 17 goals, stole the puck from Jason Blake at center ice and beat goaltender Rick DiPietro with a backhand flip on a breakaway.
New York tied it at 1 midway through the second period on Oleg Kvasha’s second short-handed goal of the season, a wrist shot from the right circle. Kvasha’s goal, his 11th, was the 10th short-handed goal allowed by Boston this season, the second-highest total in the NHL.
Murray gave Boston a 1-0 lead at 16:44 of the first period with a power-play goal. DiPietro stopped Jiri Slegr’s slap shot from the circle, but Murray put in the rebound from in front of the net.
Boston outshot the Islanders 38-24.
and held New York scoreless on five power-play opportunities. The Bruins are unbeaten in their last five games against New York, though four of those were ties.
DiPietro made 36 saves.
Notes: The Islanders have earned just 20 points on the road this season, but they have 35 points in 26 games at home. … It was a homecoming for DiPietro, who starred at Boston University. … The Bruins have scored 126 goals and allowed 121 this season, a goal differential that ranks last among Eastern Conference teams currently in playoff position.
