Board members planned to interview candidates for a director’s position.

JAY – Two panels unanimously approved sending a nearly $11 million school spending package Thursday to voters April 20. Of that, $9.6 million would be raised by taxation.

The school and budget committees voted to send the plan to voters. The money will pay for the school system and adult education for 2004-2005, with some set aside for capital improvement projects.

The bulk of the $10.95 million spending package, $10.6 million, is to run the education system. That amount reflects a $420,480 or 4 percent increase over the existing budget.

The budget includes money for a systemwide literacy teacher and curriculum coordinator, and world language teachers for the elementary and middle schools.

Also included in the package is $98,700 for Jay’s share of the SAD 36/Jay Adult Education program.

The remaining $253,263 would be dealt with in separate articles:

• $125,000 for an elevator at the high school – it is estimated to cost about $116,000 but school officials won’t know until bids come in.

• $10,000 to establish a reserve to replace the high school kitchen boiler. It is estimated to cost between $20,000 and $40,000 depending on how many parts need to be replaced.

• $61,263 for long-term reserve projects – roof repair, van replacement, truck replacement, equipment, carpet/flooring, asbestos abatement, furnace and bus.

• $57,000 for short-term reserve projects – move and supplement high school-based distance learning equipment and furnishings to middle school, replacement of storage container, and replacement of high school windows and remaining ones at the elementary school.

After the budget meeting, school board members planned to enter executive session to interview candidates for a vacant director’s position. The person would be appointed to serve until the April 20 election.

Candidates to be interviewed were Judith St. Pierre, Mary Redmond-Luce, Jane Harvell and Nancy Chaney. Former school board member Robin Roberts was interviewed at an earlier meeting. He received the second most votes in the last election.

Committee members are expected to appoint a candidate Thursday, Feb. 5.
