LEWISTON – A man who was stabbed in the chest during a fight on Pierce Street Monday night was recovering Friday at Central Maine Medical Center.
Michael Landry, 49, was conscious and able to speak with police investigators four days after he was stabbed at least a dozen times.
It’s the second time in five years that Landry has recovered from an armed assault. In March 1999, he was attacked by a man with an ax, according to police records.
Hospital officials on Friday were not releasing information about Landry’s condition at the request of his family. However, police said Landry had been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit and that he was able to speak with detectives about the stabbing.
A 16-year-old was arrested early Tuesday and charged with attempted murder. Police said the Park Street teenager stabbed Landry with a knife not far from Landry’s home at 148 1/2 Pierce St.
Witnesses said the teen was with a group of other people when Landry was stabbed and left at the side of the road.
Police who responded to the area found Landry unconscious and bleeding, but the suspects had fled. Investigators said Landry lost a great deal of blood in the attack. Medical officials who responded were at first unsure whether Landry would survive.
The 16-year-old was later found on Maple Street and was arrested. Police recovered a knife as they investigated the attack.
Investigators said the teenager knew Landry because the older man used to date the 16-year-old’s mother. Several people who know both suspect and victim said the teenager did not like Landry because of issues with that relationship.
Landry has an extensive criminal history in Lewiston, including arrests for violating an abuse order, assault, disorderly conduct and trespassing.
In March 1999, Landry was drinking with another man at a Park Street apartment when he was struck in the head with the blunt end of a hatchet, police said. Landry was hospitalized with a head wound. A 41-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault.
The 16-year-old charged in the stabbing has remained at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland since his arrest.
Because the case has not yet been filed in 8th District Court, investigators have not released the name of the suspect. Police said more arrests are possible in the assault, although none had been made as of Friday night.
