JAY – It may be a disservice to boil down a game that Ryan DiPompo will never forget and one that could propel Jay deep into the Class C playoffs into one 10 minute span. But it’s safe to say that the Tigers will be looking back on those 600 seconds for a long time.
Trailing 10-6 in the first quarter, Jay went on a 28-0 run over that 10-minute interlude and cruised to an impressive 86-57 route of Telstar Friday night at the Tigerdome.
The catalyst for the barrage was DiPompo, who scored 14 points in the span of a little over two-and-a-half minutes in the second quarter. The junior guard drilled four-straight 3-pointers, capped by a step-back, defender-hanging-on-his-elbow trey that brought the Jay faithful to their feet.
“I came out pretty cold. I missed my first two, and my first one was really flat,” said DiPompo, who finished with 16 points. “I’ve been working on getting more arc because I’ve been pretty flat all year. Then I hit one and it felt like I was throwing it in a pond. When I was hitting step-backs, I knew I was on.”
“Ryan hasn’t hit four 3s since I’ve been here, but what a great game he had,” Jay coach Mike Child joked. “I think that is going to be a momentum-builder for him. He’s probably one of the better defenders we have, but I think that’s going to happen offensively.”
Things started happening offensively for the Tigers (14-2) on a three-point play by Sean Fry (game-high 22 points) late in the first quarter that put them on top for good at 11-10. Justin Wells (nine points, 10 assists) hit a three to give Jay an 18-10 lead at the end of the period, then hit another trey a minute into the second to put the margin in double-digits for good.
DiPompo took over with the long bombs from there. Most of his treys came in transition, as the Tigers played stifling defense and dominated the boards behind Fry (12 rebounds) and Zach Charles (11 boards) on their way to a 34-10 bulge.
“Wells found me a couple of times on the fast break, and, I don’t know, I was just shooting up and shooting,” DiPompo said.
Josh Longway (10 points) finally stopped the hemorrhaging for the Rebels (10-6) with a 3 of his own, but the bleeding continued as Wells hit another trey and DiPompo closed his shooting gallery with a hoop that made it 39-13.
“In 25 years of coaching, I’ve never seen a quarter like that,” said Child.
“That was probably the best man-to-man defense we’ve played,” he added. “A 28-0 run says a little bit about our defense plus our offense.”
“It’s just taken us awhile to get into the system and everyone had to learn their roles,” DiPompo said. “Now, everything’s just clicking. We’re running, and if we can’t run, we can get in the halfcourt set and feel just as confident there.”
Jay, which shot 11-for-18 from beyond the arc, led by 29 at halftime and by as much as 37 in the third quarter. Marc Kelvey also drained a pair of 3s on his way to 21 points. Casey Fleet led the Rebels with 16.
