RUMFORD – The president of the local paper mill union said Friday that he believes there may be an announcement about layoffs at MeadWestvaco on Monday.

“Opinionwise, what I’ve been told so far is that there may be some salaried layoffs and hourly employees may be intact,” said Gary Hemingway, president of the Paper, Allied-Industrial Chemical and Energy Workers Union Local 900, “Rumors are it’s between 30 and 35 people.”

MeadWestvaco announced it is laying off 1,000 employees nationwide at the end of this month. The company did not make an expected announcement Thursday.

“We don’t comment on rumors. I’m not aware of any announcement,” said Steve Hudson, a spokesman for the Rumford mill. Of the 1,200 employees at Rumford, about 900 are paid hourly wages and about 300 are salaried.
