ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -Navy basketball coach Don DeVoe will retire after this season, ending a career in which he recorded more than 500 wins at five schools.
The Midshipmen are 3-17 and in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. DeVoe’s 510 wins rank 57th in college basketball history and 18th among active coaches.
“With the dynamics of the situation, I felt like it was the best time for myself, my family and the Navy basketball team to retire at the end of this season,” DeVoe said Monday.
DeVoe is one of only 29 active coaches to lead three different teams to the NCAA tournament. He has also coached at Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Wyoming and Florida.
DeVoe, in his 12th year as Navy’s coach, has a 182-155 record with the Midshipmen, taking them to the NCAA tournament three times. Under his direction, Navy earned at least a share of five Patriot League regular-season titles and won the league tournament three times.
This year, the Midshipmen have lost 12 of 13, including a 65-50 defeat against Lafayette on Sunday.
Navy athletic director Chet Gladchuk lauded DeVoe for his “respected and supportive commitment” to the school.
DeVoe said it was important that he finish the season.
“I’ve never quit on any team in my life, and I’m not quitting on this team,” he said.
