GORHAM – Matt Waite of Canton of the University of Southern Maine wrestling team has been named Wrestler of the Week by the Pilgrim Wrestling League for the week of Jan. 26 through Feb. 1.

Waite, wrestling in the 197-pound weight class, won three matches to improve his overall record to a 16-1. The Rookie Wrestler of the Month for November as selected by New England Intercollegiate Wrestling News, Waite has nine pins among his 16 victories this season. He won his weight class at the season-opening Roger Williams Invitational Tournament, and took runner-up honors the following weekend at the prestigious Doug Parker Invitational held at Springfield College. He is undefeated in seven dual meet matches.

Waite was ranked third in his weight class in last week’s New England College Conference Wrestling Association individual rankings.
