The Saints’ third line comes up big in a 5-2 win.

LEWISTON – Contain the offense, slow the game down, and control the pace. These were the goals Cony coach Chad Foye set out for his team before Wednesday night’s matchup with St. Dom’s.

For the first 15 minutes, all went as planned and the Saints were forced to play out of sync and inconsistent. And then the element Cony never could have expected – three goals from St. Dom’s third line paved the way for a 5-2 Saints’ victory.

“The third line really came through with three goals tonight. Still, there are improvements to be made heading into big games like Edward Little,” said St. Dom’s coach Bob Boucher. “We need to focus more on rebounds, on finishing shots when we are in front of the goal. And, we need to be stronger at moving the puck out of the defensive zone.”

Sloppy skating and careless passing resulted in just seven shots on goal for both teams combined in the first period. At 6:32 the Saints finally opened the scoring when Kyle Tyburski found the back of the net unassisted. Tyburski put home his second goal of the night off a feed from Pat O’Neil 3:37 into the second period.

The Saints killed all three penalties they were whistled for in the second period, and headed into the second intermission ahead 3-0.

Two penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct were called in the final fifteen minutes, detracting from the Cony offensive effort that posted two goals and cut the lead to 4-2 with six minutes left on the clock.

The Saints used the fast-paced style to their advantage, answering each of the Rams’ goals with one of their own. Shawn Longley notched his second goal of the night and the final score of the game on a breakaway. Longley hit his first 5:10 into the second period off a deflection.

“They are too good a team to not slow down the pace of the game,” said Foye. “They move the puck quickly, the shoot effectively, and they skate well. When we played disciplined we were right there in the game.”
