CANTON – With a 10 percent population increase expected by the time the 2010 Census is conducted, town officials are making long-term plans.

A special town meeting set to address some of these plans is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Municipal Building.

Residents will be asked to act on a Comprehensive Plan created over the past three years by a panel co-chaired by Diane Ray and Janet Davis. Among the proposals in the plan is a recommendation to relocate the village area out of the flood plain along Route 140 to a section of Route 108.

Several committees are expected to be set up to address various parts of the Comprehensive Plan.

Residents will also be asked to approve an application for a $98,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency grant that would help move homes or families from the floodplain. Administrative Assistant Kathy Hutchins said residents with flood insurance would be eligible for such assistance.

Currently, the fire and rescue squads are housed in the municipal building along with the town offices.
