1942 – 2004

NEW GLOUCESTER – Thomas Merritt Ward, 61, of Line Road died Feb. 5, at his home after an illness with cancer.

He was born in Taunton, Mass., Nov. 17, 1942, the son of Wendell Ward and Virginia Merritt Ward. He grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1961. Mr. Ward received a degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono in 1965.

He was employed at Bonney Eagle High School for a short time after receiving his degree and then began a long teaching career at Gorham High School. “Tom” retired from teaching three years ago after dedicating 36 years to the profession. As a teacher, he was very involved with the Maine Education Association. Mr. Ward worked diligently as the president of the Gorham Teacher’s Association for several years.

He recently became re-certified as a Maine Guide. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and all around outdoorsman. He enjoyed motorcycling through North America and parts of Europe and spent many winter seasons on Maine and Canadian snowmobile trails.

He is survived by his daughter, Katherine Hossler of Newcastle; his companion, Louise Sawyer of New Gloucester; his sister, Judy Ward of Cape Elizabeth; a brother, Steven Ward, and an uncle, Richard Ward both of Mill Valley, Calif.; and four nieces.
