LEWISTON – Local police and federal agents on Friday arrested a Massachusetts man accused of shooting another man in that state.

Investigators staked out an apartment building at 155 Bartlett St. for an hour before arresting 22-year-old Joel Hayden of New Bedford.

Hayden was charged with aggravated battering with the intent to murder as well as being a fugitive from justice.

Acting on a tip Friday, agents from the Central Maine Violent Crimes Task Force and Lewiston police officers found Hayden’s car parked at the Bartlett Street apartment at about noon. At about 1 p.m., investigators determined Hayden was at that residence.

He was arrested by officers who had been watching the building. Hayden was booked and jailed here, but was expected to be returned to Massachusetts for prosecution there.

The shooting Hayden is charged with occurred on Jan. 19, police said. New Bedford police were called to a fight when they discovered a man had been shot in the chest.

Hayden was named as a suspect but was said to have fled the area. Until Friday, investigators did not know where he was.

No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the stakeout and subsequent arrest.
