BANGOR – The unknown was the theme of the opening night of the 2004 Class A, B, and C state wrestling championships at the Bangor Auditorium.

The quarterfinal round was held Friday night. It was important for teams to have wrestlers win in advance in the championship brackett of the event. A total of four team points could be earned by each individual.

Wrestling will resume with the classes each competing in its respected consolation and semifinal rounds Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A wrestler can score a potential 16 points by winning a match in the championship brackett. The consolation rounds remain equally important in the double elimination tournament.

Several regional champs were upset, including Chris Enbleton (119) of Mt. Blue, Tom Moore (152) of Fryeburg, Kyle Dolloff (171) of Dirigo and Mark Stambach (189) of Lisbon.

Mt. Blue was led by the Webber brothers Shane at 130, and Seth at 135 and Josh Haines at 171. Oxford Hills had high hopes for 2003 State finalist Josh Laild (135) and Seth McAlister (140). The Vikings’ Tom Moulton executed a take down at the buzzer to win.

Camden Hills, the four-time defending Class B State champs, advanced all 12 wrestlers to lead by double digits. Mountain Valley lost five of its first seven matches to trail, including regional champ Zach Bradley (119) and Ben Madigan (152). The Falcons finished strong with pins by defending state champ Chris Smith (171), Travis Dragoon (189), Mike Hanson (215), and Dave Smith (275). Oak Hills Nikole Lemay was pinned at 1:12.

In Class C, defending state champ Lisbon leads Foxcroft 33-30.

The Greyhounds advanced 10 wrestlers, led by their first nine weight classes. Tyler Clark (103), Justin Cornell (112), Charlie Estambach (119), and Tim Sewall at (125).

Dirigo scored eight points and struggled early, but the Cougars received a win from Mike Jonaitis (112). Kyle Meile (145), Bebin Brann (152) and Dolloff each lost in the third round. Noble and Marshwood remain tight in Class A, with each team upsetting higher seeds.
