NORWAY – This fall Fare Share Co-op celebrated its 25th anniversary of providing organic and natural food and products, and now more traditional items such as Oakhurst milk, in Norway.
Fare Share began in the early 1970s when a group of families gathered to order cases of natural foods. In 1978 a store was opened on Tannery Street in Norway.
In 2001, with Norway and The Rural Development Agency, Fare Share bought and restored a historic building on Main Street. Today that building houses Fare Share Market and a community space called Fare Share Commons.
The Co-op also supports local agriculture and organic farmers and works to increase awareness of the benefits of natural and organic foods.
Fare Share is different from other businesses because it is a cooperative.
Its capital and much of its labor comes from people who are its members.
