LIVERMORE FALLS – Russell Flagg is being challenged by Kevin P. Morrissey for a seat on the Board of Selectmen in a special election Wednesday.

The polls are open from noon to 6 p.m. at the Fire Station. The successful candidate is expected to serve until June 2006.

The winner will fill the position vacated by Clayton Putnam.

Flagg said the biggest issue facing the town is the high tax rate.

“I feel that we could do some regionalization with other neighboring towns,” Flagg said.

Each department has to be looked at to see where cuts can be made, Flagg said, but it all boils down to the townspeople and what they’re willing to give up for services or change services.

If elected, Flagg said, he would work on “regionalization.”

For example, instead of each town having its own landfill maybe three or four towns could have one to handle their needs, he said.

He wants to look into the possibility of the Livermore Falls Police Department and the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department sharing some duties.

Flagg said he would like to explore whether it is cost effective for the town to do such a thing but the ultimate decision rests with vote.
