CAPE ELIZABETH – Robert Hatch, the former football coach and athletic director at Bates College, is among six athletes named to the 2004 Class of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Hatch, who played football at Boston University and drafted by the New York Giants, coached the Bobcats from 1952-1972. He was athletic director from 1974-1990. He also coach baseball, golf and track at Bates.

Joining Hatch in the 2004 Class are Richard Daniels (football, track), Arnold Green (swimming), Brad Leach (football, baseball), Dick McCabe (auto racing) and Morton Soule (football, baseball, track).

William Amergian, who worked as a football and basketball official for 50 years, will receive an award for outstanding achievement.

Sun Journal sports writer Bob McPhee will be recognized for special achievement.

Kinsey Durgin named

rookie of the week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College freshman guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood) was named the Little East Conference men’s basketball rookie of the week.

Durgin,a graduate of Telstar, played a pivotal role in both of RIC’s wins last week. He hit four clutch free throws with less than a minute remaining to preserve RIC’s 68-64 victory over Salve Regina. His three consecutive 3-pointers helped stem a UMass-Boston rally in a 71-56 victory. Durgin had 18 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals.

He has six starts in 21 games and is averaging 6.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

Clark earns Little East honors for pole vault

GORHAM – University of Southern Maine freshman Teryn Clark was named the Little East Conference Field Performers of the Week after winning the pole vault at the women’s indoor State of Maine Championships last weekend.

Clark of Winthrop cleared a personal best of 9-feet-1. Her performance enabled the team to compile 104 points and finish fourth.
