On Nov. 3, Oak Hill High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the statewide Fall Leadership Workshop at the armory in Augusta. Many schools from all over the state showed up for the annual event. The workshop began with the Pledge and the reading of the FBLA creed. Students then separated into different groups to attend a series of five out of the six workshops.
“Twist to Succeed” was a lively workshop that involved trying to pass on a hula-hoop from person to person while standing in a circle and holding hands. This required teamwork and, for many, was filled with fun, competitive edge. State Treasurer, Amanda Favreau and State Vice President, Cassie Gauthier, both of which are students at Oak Hill High School, gave the workshop.
“Get Ready, Set, Go!” was a workshop that informed students about the Spring Leadership Conference (SLC). The SLC is where all the students from around the state in FBLA compete against each other in business related topic areas. State President, Cory Shepherd of Monmouth Academy, who gave the workshop, encouraged the members to start preparing for the competitions and give it all they’ve got.
“So You Think You Know” tested the member’s knowledge about different areas of business. The students were separated into small groups and had to cooperate to come up with answers to the questions. This workshop was given by some of the students at Monmouth Academy.
“Meet to Achieve” was a group activity that showed our hand/eye coordination skills and listening skills. We split into two groups and each group got the same directions. We had to make the other team cross a line to one side, we all failed that one!
“Leading the Way with P&J” was all about making sandwiches. The members had to have one person be the leader of the group, one person do what the leader says only and make the sandwich, while the rest of the group offered ideas. The purpose was to show that there are different kinds of leaders and that the results of the group effort are going to be effected by that. Telstar High School students led the workshop.
“Wearing FBLA-PBL” made many of the members laugh and was all about fun and teamwork. There was a bunch of underwear, each with a letter on it from “FBLA-PBL.” The members had to run and find the first letter, put on the underwear, and then run back, take it off, and give it to the next person in line to put on so that he or she could find the underwear with the next letter and put that on. This went until the team had gotten someone wearing all the underwear. Oak Hill High School’s Patrick Duchette and Andrew Camardese gave this workshop.
The members from Oak Hill High School who attended this workshop were: Amanda Favreau, Kyle Harrington, Michael Sherman, Emily Grondin, Tony Poulin, Crystal Sirois, Cassie Gauthier, Patrick Duchette, Andrew Camardese, Brian Rancourt, Allison Adams, Cindy Hanlin, Whitney Votra, Stacy Bartos, Stephanie Kullson, Eric Daniels, Brandie Deschaine, Chelsea Cervantes, Cassie Kupfer, Holly Rancourt, Amber Myshrall, Melissa Larrabee, Ryan Edwards, and Jason Guerette.
