NEW GLOUCESTER – Prophet or fortune teller?

Brittany Legare told her mother that she was going to score 18 points, and that’s exactly what she did, leading Eastgate Christian Academy to a convincing 61-36 win over Gould Academy in the Western Maine Class D preliminary round Tuesday evening.

Legare and fellow senior Angie Elvin (13 points) took control of the game early with defensive pressure that limited the Huskies (6-12) to a meager three points in the first quarter as Eagles (14-5) raced out to a 15-3 advantage.

The backcourt tandem was all over the court, picking off passes and forcing off-balanced shots.

The Huskies settled down in the second quarter to play Eastgate almost even behind a fine offensive performance from Heather Kelleher (16 points), and Suzi Jump (15 points. Gould’s biggest accomplishment may have been drawing three fouls on senior center Haley Veilleux (10 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists).

“Haley and I talked about her defense and how she would have to play under control if she were going to stay on the floor in the second half,” said coach Ron Giasson.

“I was really upset with myself. I wanted to be on the floor not the bench,” said Veilleux.

Elvin didn’t let Veilleux’s foul trouble become an issue. She seemed to be everywhere but the visitors dressing room picking off a pass or draining a bucket to ignite another mini-run that ultimately put the game out of reach.

The third quarter was similar to the first quarter, with the Eagles outscoring the Huskies, 12-4.

With the game well in hand, Giasson substituted freely, making sure all of his players saw substantial playing time. That should come in handy when the Eagles advance to the big floor in Augusta to face Valley next Tuesday.
