ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) – Defensemen Mike Pudlick and Dwayne Zinger scored on long-range shots in the third period to rally the Portland Pirates to a 2-2 tie with the Albany River Rats in the AHL Wednesday night.
Pudlick scored from the right point at 4:58, and Zinger followed off a faceoff from the left point at 9:30 as Portland (19-23-8) ran its unbeaten streak to three games.
After a scoreless first period, Albany (13-28-8) took a 1-0 lead when Steve Kariya’s wraparound deflected in off diving goaltender Matt Yeats at 7:38 of the second. Greg Crozier tucked a back-hander between Yeats’ pads on a rush at 12:34 to give the Rats a 2-0 advantage, though they were being outshot at the time 16-12.
Yeats, starting in place of Rastislav Stana, who was injured during Sunday’s AHL skills competition in Grand Rapids, Mich., stopped all five shots in overtime, including a pair of great scoring chances by Kariya. Ari Ahonen finished with 35 saves for Albany, which is winless in eight games (0-5-3) since Jan. 23.
