SUNRISE, Fla. – Niklas Hagman ended a 30-game drought with two goals, helping Florida extend Pittsburgh’s franchise-record losing streak to 13 games with a 5-1 victory Thursday night.
Darcy Hordichuk, Olli Jokinen and Valeri Bure also scored for the Panthers, who have won three in a row for the first time this season. The victory was Florida’s eighth straight against Pittsburgh.
Ryan Malone scored a short-handed goal for the Penguins, who haven’t won since beating Philadelphia 2-1 on Jan. 12.
Roberto Luongo stopped 34 shots for Florida.
Pittsburgh goalie Jean-Sebastien Aubin was pulled after Hagman’s second goal made it 3-1 with 2:02 left in the second period. Aubin gave up three goals on 29 shots before being replaced by Sebastien Caron.
Lightning 5, Canadiens 3
TAMPA, Fla. – Vincent Lecavalier scored the go-ahead goal with 5:04 left, and the Tampa Bay Lightning overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-3 Thursday night.
Lecavalier, who also had two assists, was positioned in the low slot when he redirected Darryl Sydor’s shot past Jose Theodore.
Martin St. Louis and Brad Richards each scored two goals for the Lightning. St. Louis got Tampa Bay even at 2 with bad-angle goals in the second and third periods.
Tampa Bay won for just the second time when trailing after two periods (2-13-2-0).
Avalanche 4, Blues 0
ST. LOUIS – David Aebischer stopped 29 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and the Colorado Avalanche extended their point streak to 11 games Thursday night with a 4-0 victory over the slumping St. Louis Blues.
Alex Tanguay and Peter Forsberg each had a goal and an assist for Colorado, 6-0-3-2 in the last 11 games. Steve Konowalchuk and Derek Morris also scored.
The Avalanche have lost just three of 28 road games this season. They have earned at least one point in 23 of their last 24 away from home, including 14 in a row. That’s the NHL’s best run of success on the road since the 1977-78 Montreal Canadians recorded a point in 24 of 25 road games.
Maple Leafs 4, Jackets 1
TORONTO – Gary Roberts and Darcy Tucker scored power-play goals, and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 on Thursday night.
Ed Belfour made 18 saves in his first start in almost two weeks. Belfour, who missed three games with a back injury, was rarely tested, but he did stop Todd Marchant on a partial breakaway after Marchant skated between two defensemen in the first period.
Tie Domi and Mikael Renberg also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won seven of their last 10 games.
Flyers 2, Rangers 1
NEW YORK – Sean Burke made 26 saves in his first game back with Philadelphia, and Sami Kapanen scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period in the Flyers’ 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night.
With the game tied at 1, Kapanen drilled a shot from between the circles past Jusi Markkanen to give the Flyers their fourth straight victory and their eighth in their last 10 games (8-1-1).
Hurricanes 3, Capitals 3
RALEIGH, N.C. – Pavel Brendl scored late in the third period Thursday night to lift the Carolina Hurricanes into a 3-3 tie with the Washington Capitals.
Marty Murray and Sean Hill each scored for the Hurricanes, who are 0-5-2 in their last seven home games. Kevin Weekes had 18 saves for Carolina.
Jeff Halpern had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who had won the previous four meetings this season. Anson Carter and Mike Grier each scored for the Capitals, while Olaf Kolzig had 38 saves.
Carolina’s four previous losses to Washington this season came by a combined score of 18-6, but this game was competitive and physical throughout.
The game featured 17 penalties in the second period alone – including game misconduct penalties to Washington’s Darcy Verot and Carolina’s Bruno St. Jacques – and several tussles on the ice.
Carter put the Capitals ahead 3-2 with a power-play goal. Standing in front of the crease, Halpern flipped the puck back to Carter on the left goal line while battling for position.
Carter beat Weekes, who had come out when the puck was in front of net, at 8:03 of the third.
Brendl answered with his fourth goal of the season, grabbing a rebound off a shot from Eric Staal and putting it in from the left side at 14:57.
Carolina dominated the second period and took a 2-1 lead on Hill’s straightaway shot on the power play. The Hurricanes swarmed around the net, outshooting the Capitals 16-3 in the period, and would have led by more if not for Kolzig’s solid play.
The netminder turned away close shots by Jeff O’Neill, Justin Williams and Niclas Wallin in the period to keep Washington in it.
The Capitals tied it when a shot by Peter Bondra bounced off the skate of Halpern, ricocheted off Weekes and went in the net. Halpern was credited with the power-play goal at 16:59 of the period.
Notes: Halpern’s goal extended his point streak, giving him seven points in the last six games. … Hill extended his point streak to four games. He has two goals and three assists in that span. … Grier’s first-period goal marked the ninth time in 13 games that the Capitals scored first.
