AUGUSTA – Spot the No. 1 seed in western Class B with 11 points and the hole only gets deeper.

Greely (17-2) raced out to an 11-0 margin in the first period, then sputtered to a 48-38 win over No. 9 York in a girls’ basketball quarterfinal at the Augusta Civic Center Friday night.

It was a team effort in the initial sprint as Michelle Robb, Amanda Gray, Stephanie Ginn, and Brigitte Demers all contributed to the cause.

It looked like it would be an easy night for the Rangers as the top seed posted a 17-8 lead at the first break.

But something happened for the rest of the contest.

Greely managed just one field goal in the second quarter even though it increased the margin at halftime to 28-16.

In the second half, the Wildcats (8-12) began to chip away and knocked the deficit down to six with 3:47 to play. That was on a field goal by Aubrie Barrett.

Greely buckets by Abby Marstaller and Ginn slammed the door on York and preserved the win.

Marstaller led Greely and all scorers with 15 points. Emma Dickson was the only other Greely player in double figures.

York’s Mary Beaman led the Wildcats with 10.

Greely will look to avenge their regular season ending loss to Yarmouth when the teams meet in the semifinals Wednesday.
