The Sun Journal didn’t disappoint me in its opposition to the pending tax cap referendum in November (Feb. 11). I lived in Massachusetts when Proposition 2 1/2 was being put before the voters. The same arguments were made then that are being made now. Most were that services would have to be cut, and that the cities and towns would go bankrupt.

Well, let me tell you, it never happened. No one was deprived. No one lost their jobs. Teachers weren’t fired and the schools didn’t fall down. My taxes were reduced by 40 percent at the time, as were everyone else’s. Some were even more fortunate.

So, please, stop the doom and gloom because it probably won’t happen. Residents may have to give up some frills, such as owning a civic arena, which, if the ad I saw recently is correct, was taken from the owner, or some of the high school sports might have to be curtailed or paid for by the participants.

I, for one, am going to vote for the tax cap.
