The Touareg is Volkswagen’s first SUV, which was co-developed with the Porsche Cayenne, comes in two versions: a V6-powered model and another with a V8. The V6 is 3.2 liters and delivers 220 horsepower connecting to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with Dynamic Shift Program.
Touareg utilizes VW’s proven electronically controlled 4XMOTION permanent four-wheel-drive system to ensure its off-road prowess. An Air Suspension option features an on board compressor, and is a must for serious off-road enthusiasts, as it appreciably increases approach, departure and break over angles, and ground clearance. Offset driving angle for the Touareg is 35 degrees, or 45 degrees (static), with a 45 degree maximum gradient. Water fording depth is 22.8-inches.
Other noteworthy features include: an Electronic Stability Program with brake assist; electronic differential lock and brake force distribution; Hill Climb Assist; Hill Descent Control; and tire pressure monitoring system. The navigation system provides both on and off-road configurations — the off-road display graphically indicates the turning angle of the front wheels and is programmable to indicate prominent landmarks. There is no third row seat in either of the two current models, as VW felt that incorporating one jeopardized both safety and space.
