LEWISTON – For 20 years, one agency has been providing hospice care to people in the tri-county region.

That changed in October.

Beacon Hospice, a Massachusetts-based company with offices throughout New England, opened a branch in Lewiston.

The Lisbon Street office is the agency’s second site in Maine.

It has been serving people in the greater Portland area for two years out of an office in Scarborough.

“We’re the new kid in town,” said Paulette Crabtree, a registered nurse who runs the Lewiston office. “We’re really excited about the fact that we are here. We are here to be another option for people.”

Unlike the nonprofit Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, which has been providing hospice services to people in this area since 1984, Beacon Hospice is a private, for-profit agency.

Crabtree said it currently has more than 145 patients in Maine, including people who have chosen to remain at home and others in long-term care facilities.
