AUBURN – Jessica Newton poured in a game-high 37 points including 11 3-point shots from long range to lead the Central Maine Community College Mustangs to an 87-47 win in the Yankee Conference Women’s playoff game Saturday.

Heather Wojeski added 24 points in the lopsided rout while Ashley Swett,and Aubrey Gratton chipped in with 15 and 14 points respectivley.

CMCC will square off against NHTI in the Championship game Sunday.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 5, Southern Maine 4

GORHAM – Sophomore Jon Landry and freshman Nick Dunn scored third period goals to lift Bowdoin to a 5-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon.

Landry broke a 3-3 tie at 7:32 of the final period for the Polar Bears (15-6-0) when he stroked a 20-foot shot from the left circle for his 12th goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Dunn netted what proved to be the game winner.

Sophomore James LeBlanc scored the first goal of the contest for the Huskies in the first period, before Bowdoin kept matching Southern Maine’s second period scoring efforts.

Men’s basketball

Rhode Island 77, Southern Maine 61

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior guard Kamran Alemdar scored 18 points, six boards, four steals and a pair of assists to lead Rhode Island College to a 77-61 win over the University of Southern Maine in men’s basketball action Saturday.

Senior guard Lester Carter contributed 11 points for the Anchormen (11-12), while three other players scored in double figures for Rhode Island.

Junior guard Jason Levecque scored 15 points for the Huskies (8-15) in the losing effort.
