While it’s clear that Carol Palesky’s proposed tax cap is unrealistic, it’s also clear that our local, state and federal elected officials have no concept of fiscal responsibility. At a time when roads are crumbling, we are buying civic centers.
Maine’s tax burden is among the highest in the nation, yet our leaders are wondering why businesses are leaving the state. Retailers are bypassing Lewiston-Auburn and its half-vacant malls and moving to Augusta instead. Could Auburn’s record high mill rate be a factor?
It’s time that our elected leaders heed the call for tax relief at all levels and get back to basics. Stop wasting our money on frivolous “feel good” projects, elaborate new government buildings, unaffordable entitlement programs, wacky real estate deals, and start doing what they are supposed to be doing – such as providing a business-friendly economic environment, fixing the roads and providing a good education for our children.
Once the local economy is back on track, then the tax revenue will naturally allow a reasonable number of “feel good” projects.
Walter Reed, Auburn
