The Rangeley senior scores his 1,000th career point, but Hyde posts a 68-52 win.

AUGUSTA – Twenty points down. Freshmen and sophomores enjoying the tournament spotlight while anyone who’d worked up a sweat sought refuge on the bench.

Garbage time? Not Monday morning. Not for Rangeley’s Jim Goodwin.

Goodwin stamped a big, fat smiley-face on an injury-riddled senior season and a one-sided Western Class D quarterfinal loss, scoring his 1,000th career point on a foul-line jumper with 30 seconds remaining as No. 8 Rangeley fell 68-52 to No. 1 Hyde School of Bath at Augusta Civic Center.

After his team scored two field goals in the third quarter, Goodwin needed 13 of his 29 points in the final eight minutes to meet the milestone.

“I didn’t realize I had that many points. I didn’t think it was going to happen,” Goodwin said.

After spraining both ankles and missing eight regular-season games, Goodwin probably wondered three weeks ago if he’d reach the civic center, let alone hit the longshot personal achievement.

Rangeley (11-9) beat NYA and earned a tough road win at Buckfield early in the campaign. Later on, two players were dismissed from the team. As numbers dipped, losses outnumbered wins.

Goodwin wasn’t the only limping Laker, either.

“We had seven major injuries that cost players at least one game,” said Rangeley coach Len MacPhee.

But depth wasn’t the Rangeley’s biggest problem against Hyde. The Phoenix used their size advantage underneath the basket and a smothering halfcourt trap to control the pace.

Rich Ortega, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior center, led Hyde with 33 points, 12 rebounds and five steals.

Bobby Moore scored eight of his 11 points in the first half as the Phoenix (14-1) rolled up a double-digit lead.

Hyde will face Pine Tree Academy in Wednesday’s semifinals. The Phoenix handed the Breakers two of their three regular-season losses.

“They took us to overtime early in the season,” Ortega said.

Rangeley used a two-point win over Gould in the preliminary round to get here.

“Jimmy had a big game with 35 points and 13 rebounds against Gould and another nice game today,” MacPhee said.

As was the case against the Huskies, three players did all the scoring for Rangeley.

Freshman David Jensen hit for 14, with junior James Raymond adding nine off the bench.

“We lost too many people to injuries and academics,” said Goodwin, who hopes to play college basketball next winter.
