LEWISTON – Medieval combat and chivalry came alive at the Lewiston Public Library recently through a visit by members of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

Charles Darling, David Hamilton and Caitlin Marie Hemingway – all active with the local chapter, known as “Rolling Thunder” – were invited to the monthly Hooked on Books youth discussion group to demonstrate some of the centuries-old customs told about in the classic fantasy book, “A Horse and His Boy,” by C.S. Lewis.

Assuming their chosen SCA alter-egos of medieval warriors Tristan Drake and Dahmen Blakstaff, Darling and Hamilton arrived for the occasion outfitted in armor and gave a spirited exhibition of one-on-one medieval sword fighting.

It was followed by a question-and-answer session in which they explained the particulars of their armor and weapons as well as various social practices specific to the Middle Ages.

The society is an international organization dedicated to studying the Middle Ages by recreating the pastimes and crafts of the period.

The Hooked on Books program sponsors monthly meetings at which local youngsters age 8 to 12 chat about a selected book and participate in an enrichment activity related to the theme of the book.
