LIVERMORE FALLS – Overtime cost on winter roads maintenance came under fire from selectman again Tuesday night as foreman Denis Castonguay presented a storm-by-storm report for the season, to date.

Castonguay’s master storm records listed storm type, date, yards of sand, salt and calcium used, the number of overtime hours and the number of plows used.

Selectmen reported they had received complaints from citizens objecting to so many trucks at the garage, just waiting.

“Denis was supposed to pre-treat, then call the whole crew in, but it seems he’s calling in the whole crew,” said Chairman Bernal Lake. “I don’t feel having the whole crew is beneficial, plowing a half inch of snow.”

Others on the board joined in, also having received complaints. They also discussed their dislike of the feeling left by the calcium. “Like driving in grease, at first,” said Bill Demaray.

However, the board has agreed to continue with the salt priority that is a new system that takes time to learn.

“Trying to find the happy medium on salt and sand is becoming expensive,” Lake said. “Perhaps we can cut back a little on overtime and still keep the roads safe,” he suggested.

In other business, they discussed discontinuing Pasture Lane off Route 133, a driveway to the Pease Farm off Route 106, opposite Strickland Loop, both of which are now being plowed. Any changes would need town meeting approval.

Also being discussed is why Turmel Road is all plowed to Dr. Eastman’s house, which is in Jay. Town Manager Alan Gove will research the status of the roads.

The contract with the Animal Shelter was approved and it was agreed to have two of the old downtown development sketches laminated.

A citizen is needed to fill the remainder of Russell Flagg’s term on the SAD 36 Board of Directors. Anyone interested should contact the town office.

The manager needs a new computer and will use the one at the town garage, if necessary. No funds are available for replacing his but he will look into the least expensive alternative.
