Brian Gerrity is good for 21 points as the Bobcats roll in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament.

BRUNSWICK – Brian Gerrity poured in 21 points, including five 3-pointers to lead Bates College to an 87-52 win over Bowdoin College in the first round of the NESCAC Tournament Saturday.

The Bobcats (18-7) placed five players in double figures as Rob Stockwell (16 points), Jon Furbush (14 points), Ramon Garcia (12 points), and Zak Ray (11 points) built a 45-20 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Polar Bears (16-9) were led by Kyle Petrie with 17 points and T.J. McLeod who added 13 in the setback.

USM 74,

UMass-Dartmouth 68

GORHAM – Junior guard Derek Loveley hit a string of three 3-pointers in the second half to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 74-68 win over The University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in Little East Conference basketball action Saturday.

The Huskies scoring honors were shared by Lovely, Ryan Garland, and Jason Leveque with 14 points apiece while Mike Francouer added 10.

UMF 86, Thomas 70

WATERVILLE – Travis Magnusson poured in a team-high 19 points to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to an 86-70 win over Thomas College in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Beavers (13-12) took a 41-28 lead into the intermission, with Trafton Teague and Shawn Gallagher adding 15 and 13 points respectivley.

The Terriers (5-19) were paced by Dan Gappi with a game-high 20 points while James Godley and Adam Rich added 16 and 15 points.

St. Joe’s 90, UMPI 84

STANDISH – Leroy Gore poured in 21 points and Noah LaRoche added 19 as St. Joseph’s College handed the University of Maine at Presque Isle an 90-84 win in men’s basketball action Saturday.

The Monks (8-16) jumped out to a 39-29 lead at the end of the first half with Mike Stallings and Steve Monteiro adding 17 points apiece.

The Owls’ (9-13) Fabian Lennox matched Gore with 21 points, while Jon Codrey chipped in with 19.

CMCC 68, EMCC 61

BANGOR – Kevin Carrier (18 points) and Chris Brackett (16 points) led Central Maine Community College to a 68-61 win over Eastern Maine Community College in the semifinal round of the Maine Small College Conference Saturday afternoon.

The Mustangs took a 31-24 lead into the intermission and then held on as both teams tallied 37 points in the second half to secure the victory.

CMCC will play Sunday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Northern Maine Community College-Southern Maine Community College game for the championship.

Maine 71, UMBC 63

CATONSVILLE, Md. – Mark Flavin had 23 points and 15 rebounds as Maine beat the University of Maryland, Baltimore County 71-63 Saturday night.

Kevin Reed added 23 points and tied a career high with seven 3-pointers for the Black Bears (17-8, 11-5 America East), who have won six of their last seven games. Maine also got nine assists from Eric Dobson.

John Zito scored 19 points and Rob Gogerty had 12 for the Retrievers (7-18, 4-12 America East), who have dropped four straight and eight of nine.

Reed hit four first-half 3-pointers, helping Maine to a 34-28 halftime lead.

Seth Davis’ bank shot capped a 7-0 run, as UMBC erased a 14-10 deficit with a 7-0 run midway through the first half.

But the Black Bears responded with a three-point play by Dobson, a David Dubois layup and a Reed 3-pointer for a 22-17 advantage, which they never relinquished.

Flavin scored 10 of Maine’s first 16 points in the second half, exploiting a porous Retriever inside.

A dunk by Dubois put the Black Bears up 52-31 with 13:35 left in the game.

Women’s basketball

USM 98,

UMass-Dartmouth 50

GORHAM – Jen Webster drained a game-high 25 points in her final regular-season home game to power the University of Southern Maine to a 98-50 win over the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth in women’s Little East Conference play Saturday.

The Huskies (24-1) outscored the Corsairs (10-15) by a 53-32 margin in the second half, and held the guests to just five second-half field goals.

Tiffany Jones added 11 points while Megan Myles (seven rebounds), Shannon Kynoch, and Marybeth Pariseau rounded out the scoring with 10 points each.

Bowdoin 68, Colby 37

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College cruised to a 68-37 win over Colby College Saturday in the first-round of the NESCAC Tournament.

The Polar Bears, ranked as the top seed in the tournament and No. 1 in the nation, were led by Lora Trenkle, Ericka Nickerson, and Eileen Flaherty who scored 14 points apiece in the lopsided victory.

The White Mules were led by Sara Kelly with a team-high 11 points.

Endicott 66, UNE 58

BIDDEFORD – First-year guard Liz Yuneman paced Endicott with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to lift Endicott to a 66-58 win over the University of New England in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Power Gulls (13-12) held a 28-24 halftime advantage despite only hitting 8-of-28 from the floor, but managed a balanced attack through the second half.

Endicott senior Jen Grace scored five key points during the scoring run that followed the Nor’easters tying up the contest at 54-54.

Missy Stults tallied the game-high 23 points for the Nor’easters as she became the school’s career scoring leader with 1,751 points and added eight rebounds to become the first player to amass more than 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points in concert.

Thomas 85, Bay Path 31

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Kim Drosdik threw in 29 points to assist Thomas College in an 85-31 rout of Bay Path College in women’s basketball action Saturday.

The Terrier (11-13) offense went unchecked as Drosdik was able to toss a record-setting nine 3-pointers.

Tammy Fowler pitched in with 18 points, while Amanda Godley and Heather Carter tallied 12 and 11 points respectively for Thomas.

The Wildcats (3-20) were led by Meaghan Cauley with 19 points and five rebounds.

Bates 62, Amherst 57

LEWISTON – Lauren DuBois hit a pair of jump shots with less than two minutes to play to steer Bates to a 62-57 win over Amherst in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC women’s basketball championship on Saturday afternoon.

Amherst (11-14) led 30-19 at halftime. Shannon Russell helped the Lord Jeffs build the lead, scoring 24 points and hitting five treys along the way.

Bates (18-7) trailed the Lord Jeffs for most of the game, but went on a 12-4 run over the final five minutes to spoil Amherst’s upset bid.

DuBois broke a 57-57 tie with a jumper from the foul line with 1:22 to left to regulation, and following a defensive rebound and pass from by Olivia Zurek, she knocked home a consecutive field goal to put the Bobcats up by four with 36 seconds remaining.

Women’s hockey

USM 4, Sacred Heart 2

GORHAM – Junior Jessica Judge netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner, to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 4-2 win as the Huskies swept a two-game weekend series Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (6-13) drew first blood with a goal from Michelle Panella less than two-minutes into the contest. The Huskies (13-9-1) drew even at 15:07 on a goal by sophomore Audra Hill.

Bowdoin 10, Trinity 0

HARTFORD, Conn. – Cat MacEachern recorded 11 saves as Bowdoin College skated to a 10-0 win over Trinity College in women’s hockey Saturday.

The Polar Bears (17-4-1) attack was led by Kate Forney and Jayne Woogerd as each netted a pair of goals.

Men’s hockey

Colby 3, Hamilton 1

WATERVILLE – Brian Chisholm converted a pass from Patrick Walsh and Ross MacMillan at 4:04 of the third period to lift Colby College to a 3-1 win over Hamilton College in men’s hockey action Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, the White Mules (13-6-4) found the back of the net as Kevin Lyons scored a goal at 2:16 for the lead. Nick Bayley iced the game with an insurance goal at 9:56 of the third period, sending Colby to its 13th win of the season. Hamilton’s lone goal came at 7:45 of the second period as John Gordon scored on an assist from Elliott Altberg.

Bowdoin 4, Amherst 1

BRUNSWICK – Shannon McNevan nailed a pair of goals in the third period to secure a 4-1 win over Amherst College in hockey action Saturday.

The Lord Jeffs (11-10-2) took an early lead 14 seconds into the game when Mike Kreger lifted the puck into the top right corner of the net.

The Polar Bears (16-6-0) evened up the contest on a power-play goal from Nick Dunn in the final minutes of the first period. Bowdoin took the lead 47 seconds into the middle frame when Jon Landry flipped a wrist shot past the goaltender
